It is well known that Ancient Spartan women practiced wrestling against each other. This is an historical fact. At the same time, instances of participating Ancient Greek women in other combat sports are mostly related to legends and mythology. However, why not to imagine an ancient woman well trained in wrestling participating in a boxing or a pankration match? Or a combative Amazon sparring with a next door girl… These ladies do not pull each other's hair, scratch or scream. They competed neatly and nobly demonstrating strength and skills which were required for any ancient woman who had to protect her home from barbarians.
Having known from numerous ancient sculptures how those women looked like, we can dream up an ancient female hand-to-hand fighter. Being well-built buxom lady, she is also strong, muscular and violent...
Older ladies help her wrap her hands with strips of twisted soft leather or cloth. Then she engages in a hand to hand encounter with another girl in front of female spectators - no men are allowed there once the girls compete nude. To imagine them punching, holding and throwing each other in a pankration contest is even more fascinating. Yipes!!! Eee!!!
