Interview with illustrator Nikolay Kulikovsky

(Nick implements custom orders - the conditions are below)

Nick, please tell us about yourself. Are you a professional artist or story illustrating is your hobby?

- I am 42, began painting at elementary school. I don’t remember who and when encourage me by praising my imperfect drawings but since that time I have been doing this. I never considered myself as an artist, I call myself a depicter, it seems more correct. As I finished high school, I was advised to study art but I didn’t consider that opinion. I regret that decision – not because I wish to be an artist but because I would like to paint better than I do.

What technical tools and software do you use to create your artworks?

- Pencil and helium or capillary pen. Since recently, I have handled Photoshop which helps me a lot!

Why did you choose such an artistic subject as fighting women? Was that because it became very popular and you could make some money or you are personally interested in this subject?

- I grew fond of female combat and started depicting it. Some elements of those actions agitated my imagination so strong that I hungered for depiction them.

Are female fights the main subject of your creativity?

- In fact, this subject is the only one I depict – it includes male Vs female fighting, face-sitting and back-sitting. Whatever I start drawing, female fight comes out.

When did you realize that female combat excited you?

- When I was eleven or twelve.

How it happened? What specifically happened?

- I was five when I happened to watch wrestling women – it was a wrestling contest between two adult mature women. It happened at a village celebration; I came into the house because was thirsty and saw how a woman took down another woman and sat on top or her. Then the winner rose to her feet, picked up her opponent, pushed her out and closed the door. I thought they even didn’t notice me. This scene impressed me but later I forgot about it. The second event happened at the school stadium when I was about thirteen. Two girls about eleven wrestled while their girl friends watched. As one of the wrestlers was sitting on the other, the lower one purposely raised the hem of her opponent’s skirt as high as she could. But it didn’t really help her and soon she was firmly pinned with her arms pressed down to the ground by the winners’ knees. After that my interest to girl fights supplanted all other interests.

Do you approve real female combative activities like boxing or wrestling or such contests are better being an imagination and incentive to artistic creativity?

- Yes, I approve them unless there are excessive cruelty or bloodshed. It is true not just for fighting women but in general as well.

Are there specific combative activities or elements which inspire you more?

- I like ground struggle, especially so-called “schoolgirl pins” or some similar positions. It is related with my childhood impressions related to female fighting. My preferences can be seen in my artworks

How could you explain such a contemporary phenomenon on a mass scale as men excitement watching fighting women or fantasies about them?

- I didn’t know this phenomenon was on a mass scale, I didn’t meet too many people sharing my weakness for fighting females.

May be it is not on a mass scale but you wouldn’t deny that very many people visit innumerable web sites with catfight stories, pictures and video with fighting women of mixed fights.

Do you have favorite stories among those you have illustrated?

- I like stories by Polina Lukonina. Also two stories by Boris Bagarov: “Lerka in Summer” and “A day in May”. I would recall more stories if reread all of them but I don’t have time for that.

We appreciate Nikolay's artworks and the time he has spent answering our questions. Thanks Nick!
